Bacteria is present everywhere and is a necessary part of life. BAD bacteria is what causes problems, especially when it comes to keeping our food safe! Below is a list of several of the most common types of bacteria that can "corrupt" our food and make us ill. Any sickness caused by this type of bacteria is referred to as a food borne illness.


Foodborne Illness

Sickness resulting from eating food that is not safe to eat.=

The Federal Government estimates that 76 million people 
become ILL and 5,000 people DIE of Foodborne illnesses

It can take anywhere from 1/2 hour to 6 weeks to become sick after eating an unsafe food....

FOOD SAFETY

To avoid microbial foodborne illness:
  • Clean hands, food contact surfaces, and fruits and vegetables. Meat and poultry should not be washed or rinsed.
  • Separate raw, cooked, and ready-to-eat foods while shopping, preparing, or storing foods.
  • Cook foods to a safe temperature to kill microorganisms.
  • Chill (refrigerate) perishable food promptly and defrost foods properly.
